Who We Are

From the Beginning

The Community Action Program directors conducted a meeting on August 30, 1972.  Within that meeting, a duty was given to help establish Senior Citizen Centers across the nation.  In Custer, South Dakota, the Senior Center was already established. After members of the American Association of Retired Persons Chapter No. 588, visited the Custer Senior Center they met on September 1, 1972 for the purpose of receiving input from individuals concerning the establishment of a local Senior Citizen Center in Sturgis, South Dakota.  On September 7, the committee met with the Meade County Commissioners to authorize a one-tenth of a mill levy for operational purposes. On October 20, 1972, the Meade County Senior Citizen Center Association officially opened.

Membership is open to those who are 55 years of age and over; who participate in the work of the center, abide by the by-laws and policies and pay annual dues.

The purpose of this organization shall be to promote the health and welfare of the senior citizens of Meade County and surrounding areas by ways and means proposed by the governing board of the corporation; to create fellowship and better understanding between senior citizens and the general public.
